Research Project: DEVELOPMENT OF COTTON-BASED CHRONIC WOUND DRESSINGS WITH DEROYALE TEXTILES AND TISSUE TECHNOLOGIES

Location: Cotton Chemistry and Utilization Research

Project Number: 6435-41430-004-01
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Feb 15, 2005
End Date: Dec 14, 2009

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to develop a cotton-based chronic wound dressing.

Approach:
Tissue Technologies has licensed patents related to wound dressings for treatment of chronic wounds. Based on U.S. Patent No. 6,599,523 APreparation of peroxide-oxidized, sulfonated, and phosphorylated cotton , which is jointly owned by Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and the United States of America as represented by the Department of Agriculture and licensed to Tissue Technologies a pilot scale process for production of the cotton-based chronic wound dressing will be developed at Southern Regional Research Center. DeRoyale Textiles (cooperator) has an interest in commercializing a phosphorylated cotton wound dressing for treatment of chronic wound. Finishing chemistry treatments of cotton gauze will be scaled up from a laboratory scale to a pilot scale level by the USDA, and will be made adaptable to textile mill production of the chronic wound dressing by the cooperator. DeRoyale Textiles in Powell, TN, (cooperator) is working with the USDA on coordinating the transfer of the finishing chemistry treatments for the chronic wound dressing to their plant in Tazwell, TN.
