Keeping Your Child Safe at Home and in School: Crisis Planning and Emergency Response - Tuesday, October 21, 2003
Time: 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM ET
Families trust schools to keep their children safe during the day, and children and youth rely on in the adults who protect them. Thanks to the efforts of millions of parents, teachers, and staff across America, schools remain some of the safest places for our nation’s youth. However, incidents such as the tragic events of September 11th, the DC sniper and Hurricane Isabel have taught us that school districts in this country may be touched either directly or indirectly by a crisis at any time. Schools and districts need to be ready to handle emergencies, large and small, to keep children and staff out of harm’s way and to help students through a crisis and return them home safely to their parents.
The October edition of Education News will feature interviews and discussions with Department officials, school safety personnel, mental health professionals, community first responders and activist parents to explain the need for comprehensive crisis planning and to determine what constitutes an effective approach in today’s environment. Throughout, the show will highlight schools and communities that have developed model crisis plans, hear “lessons learned” from officials that have faced crisis in their schools, and highlight tools and resources educators and parents can use to help them with crisis planning and emergency response in their school community.
The evening’s conversation will explore key questions such as:
- How does the No Child Left Behind Act address school safety and what options are available for parents whose children attend dangerous schools?
- What does the research say about effective crisis planning?
- What are the key areas of crisis management that all school crisis plans should address?
- What lessons from tragedies such as recent school shootings and the DC sniper case are transferable to communities for developing comprehensive response and recovery plans?
- How should schools engage parents, the community, law enforcement, and local government to develop effective crisis plans?
- Where can parents and school officials go to find help and resources on crisis management topics?
