The Division of Workplace Programs (DWP), part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, manages the Federal government’s drug-free workplace program, which includes drug testing for certain employees.  As part of this, DWP also oversees the National Laboratory Certification Program, which certifies laboratories to conduct forensic drug testing for Federal agencies and organizations in certain industries required to conduct drug testing under Federal law.

Although not required to do so, many non-government, non-regulated employers choose to follow the Federal government’s drug-free workplace model.  As such, DWP also serves as a resource for employers in implementing their own drug-free workplace programs, particularly related to drug-testing processes and technologies.  It does this in a variety of ways:

  • The Drug-Free Workplace Helpline (1-800-WORKPLACE (800-967-5752) or helpline@samhsa.hhs.gov, which provides one-on-one assistance.
  • The Division of Workplace Programs , which provides a variety of resources and information regarding drug-free workplace programs, drug-testing processes and procedures, and workplace health, wellness and safety strategies.   A key part of this Web site is an online Welcome to the Drug-Free Workplace Kit! for employers.
  • The GetFit Web site, which offers employers a free way to provide workers and their families with confidential access to credible information about physical and mental health and alcohol and drug use.

DWP also administers a grant program focused on prevention and early intervention with young adults in the workplace and oversees a number of model workplace-based programs designed to identify and promote best practices in workplace health and wellness.
