Target Training PopulationsHWWT, The Tony Mazzocchi Center has access to approximately 875,000 USW members who form 3,500 local unions located in every state. USW has established H&S training programs and field more than 200 national and site worker-trainers who recruit and train workers. Approximately 336,000 USW members are concentrated in the paper, petroleum, chemical, rubber, plastics and primary metals industry groups, all of which contain large quantities of hazardous waste, and experience large quantities of toxic releases. These workers who are engaged in production and maintenance crafts form the primary targets of our training. HDPT, The Tony Mazzocchi Center has access to approximately 875,000 USW members who form 3,500 local unions located in every state. These workers who are engaged in production and maintenance crafts form the primary targets of our training. We will target 306 RMP sites at which 78,159 USW members work. We are the only national training organization that has access to this set of workers. DOE, The Tony Mazzocchi Center has access to more than 3,500 members in seven states, through six union locals at six DOE reservations. We will target for training workers whose jobs (primarily site remediation and reclamation) put them at risk of exposure to hazardous materials and waste, and risks associated with hazardous materials incidents. These cleanup programs generate hazardous waste that must be removed, containerized, stored, processed and shipped by site workers. As a result of the National Defense Authorization Act of 1993, Section 3161(c), our members have moved from production to “cleanup” contracts. Program DescriptionThe Tony Mazzocchi Center provides training under the Hazardous Waste Worker Training Program (HWWTP), the Hazmat Disaster Preparedness Training Program (HDPTP), and the Nuclear Workers Training Program (DOE). The long-term objective of the Consortium is to prevent work-related harm by training workers on how to best protect themselves, their communities and the environment. The HWWTP provides environmental health and safety training to workers from a variety of backgrounds-first responders and workers. Site-specific instruction is customized to employer needs. The training accommodates workers with limited English proficiency and includes a "Train the Trainer" component. The (HDPTP) program focuses on the prevention of catastrophic events that might be caused by acts of terror or natural disasters by not only preparing for the response but also applying the principles of OSHA’s Process Safety Management standard to minimizing the target potential of sites. The (DOE) program trains workers who are, or have the potential to be, employed on demolition, decommission, and decontamination projects and TSD facilities at the DOE nuclear weapons facilities.
