What You Can Do

At Home

Your home is where you can best influence what your kids eat and do. It’s also the place where you can really set a good example. Show them with your own behavior that good health is a priority. Most importantly, remember that improving your family’s lifestyle is something to be excited about. It means trying new things and feeling better—which is definitely something to celebrate.

Eating Out

Sometimes the convenience of fast food is hard to resist. But when kids eat out, they generally eat bigger portions and more of the bad stuff—sugar, sodium, and fat—than they would at home. That’s why, when you do take your kids to eat out, it’s important to make the best choices you can. Small changes in what your kids order can really reduce the overall bad food that they eat.

Reading Between the Lines: Menus don’t always tell you what’s really in your child’s favorite meal. Did you know that a 42oz “super size” soda is equal to 3 1/2 cans? That can mean it contains as much as 30 teaspoons of sugar.

At School

Help your school take action: You can’t watch your children every moment of the day. But when you send them off to school, you can still have a say in what they eat. Help your school out by telling them about the Healthy Schools Program and asking them to get involved.

The Healthy Schools Program: Our Healthy Schools Program is helping schools across the country provide better food and more physical activity. Every year we incorporate more schools into the program.
