Research Project: Feeding and Grazing Strategies to Control Gastrointestinal Parasites in Meat Goats

Location: Appalachian Farming Systems Research Center, Beaver, WV

Project Number: 1932-21410-001-03
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 04, 2005
End Date: Aug 03, 2010

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to define feeding/grazing stategies to reduce gastrointestinal (GI) parasites, mainly Haemonchus contortus, in meat goats.

Approach:
Laboratory, pen, and pasture studies will be conducted with medicinal plants, by-products, or specifically isolated plant chemical compounds that have potenial anthelmintic properties for small ruminants. Specifically, Haemonchus control in pasture-based and drylot meat goat finishing systems will be measured by evaluating effects of chemical and physical characteristics of plants in goats on fecal egg counts and larvae genus. Information obtained will enhance existing research-based management guidelines related to pasture, feed supplements, parasite control and meat quality for meat goat producers.
