Alternate Title

Phase III Randomized Study of Sublobar Resection With Versus Without Intraoperative Brachytherapy in High-Risk Patients With Stage I Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

Basic Trial Information

SRCI, NCT00107172

Trial Description

Purpose:

Surgery may be an effective treatment for non-small cell lung cancer. Internal radiation uses radioactive material placed directly into or near a tumor to kill tumor cells. It is not yet known whether surgery and internal radiation therapy are more effective than surgery alone in treating non-small cell lung cancer.

This randomized phase III trial is studying surgery and internal radiation therapy to see how well they work compared to surgery alone in treating patients with stage I non-small cell lung cancer.

Eligibility:

Eligibility criteria include the following:

  • At least 18 years old
  • No previous internal radiation therapy to the chest
  • For more information about the eligibility criteria for this trial, refer to the Health Professional version.

Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial.

Treatment/Intervention:

Patients will be randomly assigned (have an equal chance of being placed) to one of two treatment groups.

Patients in group one will undergo surgery to remove the tumor.

Patients in group two will undergo surgery as in group one. They will also undergo internal radiation therapy during surgery.

Quality of life will be assessed periodically. Patients will be evaluated at 3 and 6 months, every 6 months for 2½ years, and once a year for 2 years.

Important:

For more details about this trial, refer to the Health Professional version of the trial summary.

If you are interested in participating in a clinical trial, contact your doctor for a referral or call a trial contact person listed below. You may see the same contact person listed at more than one site, however, if you call the number listed you can ask to speak to the study coordinator or person involved with the specific trial you are interested in. If you have questions about cancer or clinical trials, call the Cancer Information Service at 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237).
