Chairman Johnson Presents Two Volunteers with President’s Call to Service Award

December 20, 2006, Alexandria, VA – National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Chairman JoAnn Johnson presented the President’s Call to Service Award to Mr. Kenneth Uffman and Mr. James Moore, during a ceremony at the Credit Union Service Center, located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The President’s Call to Service Award recognizes 4,000 hours or more of volunteer service over a lifetime.

Over the past several decades, Mr. Uffman and Mr. Moore, both from Baton Rouge, have demonstrated the ‘people helping people’ philosophy by volunteering for several organizations. Mr. Uffman, a retired Air Force Captain, has volunteered with the Louisiana Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy; Credit Bureau of Baton Rouge, Inc; Volunteer Baton Rouge; Consumer Credit Counseling Service; the Salvation Army; and Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Moore’s volunteerism also spans several decades and includes service with E-Federal Credit Union; AARP volunteer tax counseling; family debt counseling; and the Crisis Intervention Center, which established the Leaving a Legacy program.

“It was an honor to present these two deserving individuals with the President’s Call to Service Award,” said Chairman Johnson. “Their dedicated and selfless commitment to the credit union community and beyond can inspire us all to serve something greater than ourselves. America’s credit unions remain vibrant institutions because of the countless hours given by their volunteers, most of which goes unnoticed. I commend all those throughout the credit union system who sacrificially give their time to make a difference in the lives of their members.”

In his 2002 State of the Union address, President George W. Bush issued a challenge to all Americans to make time to help their neighbors, communities, and Nation through service. In 2003, President Bush created the President's Volunteer Service Award Program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. In his January 2002 State of the Union Address, President Bush called on all Americans to make a difference in their communities through volunteer service. He created USA Freedom Corps, an Office of the White House, to strengthen and expand volunteer service.
