Of Current Interest...7/21/2009 – The USGS Ohio Water Microbiology Laboratory is participating in the Chicago Health, Environmental Exposure, and Recreation Study (CHEERS) during the 2009 recreation season. The IMS/ATP rapid detection method for E. coli is being tested in secondary-contact waters, in collaboration with University of Illinois-Chicago, School of Public Health. Additional data being collected include concentrations of fecal-indicator organisms by culture methods and qPCR, pathogen detection and quantification, and human health epidemiology information. 5/20/2009 – The Ohio Nowcast will run from May 18 through Labor Day in 2009. The Nowcast provides near real-time estimates of recreational water-quality conditions at two Lake Erie beaches (Huntington and Edgewater) and one recreational river site (Cuyahoga River at Jaite). The Nowcast is provided by the Cuyahoga County Board of Health and Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District 7 days/week at Lake Erie sites and by the U.S. National Park Service 4 days/week at the Cuyahoga River site.
