Exterior view of the Potter Stewart U.S. Courthouse

100 E. Fifth St.
Cincinnati, OH 45202

The nine-story Potter Stewart U.S. Post Office and Courthouse was designed in the Art Modern style and features more than 440,000 square feet of rentable space, with the judiciary as the main tenant. The building, located in the heart of the Cincinnati central business district, is adjacent to the John W. Peck Federal Building.

Completed in 1938 during the FDR Administration, the Potter Stewart Courthouse was the second federally-owned building erected on the current site and the third federally owned building in Cincinnati. Eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, the Courthouse's primary elevations are clad in limestone atop a dark granite base and exhibit both Art Deco and Art Modern details. Significant interior spaces include: 1) the two-story main lobby with marble detailing, 2) the original elevator lobbies with decorative brushed aluminum elevator doors, and 3) historic courtrooms with original wood paneling. In 1993 the courthouse was named after the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, who previously served as a U.S. Court of Appeals Judge for the Sixth Circuit.

The building is currently undergoing its second prospectus level renovation in recent years. The first project, completed in 2005, included court space renovations and building system upgrades. The current project, a continuation of the first, is scheduled for 2010 completion.
