Depository Library Council Blog Created For Community Discussion

The Depository Library Council (DLC) invites the library community and general public to post their comments on "Toward a Vision of the Government Information Environment of the 21st Century: A Draft Outline," on the DLC Vision Outline Blog at: http://dlcvisionoutline.blogspot.com.

With the advent of the Web, access to Federal Government information has expanded far beyond Federal Depository Libraries. The current environment presents challenges to Federal Depository Libraries in four key areas:

  • Library Roles in the Non-Exclusive Environment
  • Managing Collection and Delivering Content
  • Adding Value
  • Deploying Expertise

The DLC has developed a series of questions to be used as guides in drafting papers on each of these significant issues. It is our hope that these papers will help focus the discussion as we envision our future as providers of government information at the Fall Depository Library Conference, October 16-19, 2005.

A blog has been created for community discussion of these significant topics. The use of a blog will provide the quickest and most efficient way to share comments among many stakeholders. The four key topics mentioned above, as well as the entire outline, are available for comment and information sharing through October 15, 2005. At the end of the comment period the contents of the blog will be archived and linked from the DLC page off of the FDLP Desktop at http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fdlp/council/index.html.

Another blog will be established for comments on the document developed by Council as a result of this process, following the Fall 2005 Federal Depository Library Conference.

You can comment on any or all sections of the draft by clicking on the "comments" link at the end of each topic. You may choose to comment anonymously or you may proceed with a very brief one-time registration process that will allow you to login repeatedly as the blog grows and add comments under your own identity.

RSS Feed Now Available From GPO

An RSS Feed (Rich Site Summary/Really Simple Syndication) for FDLP Desktop News and Updates is now available for free from the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) at: http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fdlp/index.html.

RSS is a small XML file that notifies users when a Web site has been updated. Users can subscribe to an RSS feed using a stand-alone program, also known as an aggregator or news-reader. They will then receive a type of notification message that alerts them to new FDLP Desktop News and Updates. Links to numerous news readers are available from the DMOZ Open Directory Project, Google, or Yahoo.

RSS feeds will ensure more timely and efficient information dissemination, as subscribers will receive up-to-the-minute updates from GPO.

For more information or to submit comments on GPO's new RSS feed, visit http://www.gpoaccess.gov/rss/. Additional feeds will continue to be added starting in late August, and will be compiled on this page. If you have questions, please use the GPO online help service at http://gpo.custhelp.com, and put “RSS feed” in the search box.

National Needs and Offers List Now Hosted by GPO

After several years, the successful partnership between the University of North Dakota's (UND) Chester Fritz Library and GPO for the support of the National Needs and Offers (N&O) List has ended. The success of this service would not have been accomplished without UND's dedication and commitment. GPO wishes to express its sincere appreciation for the contribution that UND has made through its N&O service. At this time, GPO will be providing this service as it currently exists while we continue to investigate other modes of making the N&O service available.

The National Needs and Offers List is a tool used by depository librarians for collection and development purposes, in which selective depositories seeking to dispose of publications withdrawn from their collections may place publications with other depositories. Visit the N&O new location on GPO Access at http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fdlp/tools/needs_of/index.html.

Federal Depository Library PURL Referral Report

The Web address for registering for and receiving statistical information on the number of referrals from registered Federal depository library Web pages to documents within the Federal Depository Library Program Electronic Collection has changed.

The reports, formerly located on the Federal Bulletin Board, will now be posted at http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fdlp/coll-dev/referrals/.

Federal depository libraries that would like to register their institution's domain names so that they can be included in the report can do so at: http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fdlp/coll-dev/referrals/referralinfo.html.

If you have registered for this statistical information before, there is no need to do so again. Registering your domain names is completely voluntary, and the information will be used only for the purposes of providing you with statistical information.
