Physical therapy and occupational therapy first began in the Indian Health Service (I.H.S.) in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Since that time physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and audiology within I.H.S. and Tribal programs have been expanding each year.
Hallmarks of Indian Health Rehabilitation services provided include community outreach, preventative education and cultural appreciation. In addition, services include the clinical specialties of diabetic footcare, hand therapy, wellness programs, EMG-NCV testing, prosthetic/orthotic clinics, women's health and urinary incontinence programs, developmental pediatric clinics, and geriatric programs. Rehabilitation departments in Indian Health also provide facility employees with wellness and fitness programs, backcare education and ergonomic evaluations.
