ITAM Tools

Within the Federal ITAM framework, there is an assumption that agencies will move toward higher maturity levels with the assistance of automated asset management tools.

As an agency matures from having little control over IT assets to having a defined ITAM program with vision, policies, and procedures, automated tools are needed to help manage the IT asset lifecycle.

Most contemporary ITAM models underscore the importance of automated tools. View some of the ITAM models proposed by various vendors.

Automated tools can supply the great quantity of reliable information that is needed within the Federal ITAM framework to measure and manage the assets and to inform decisions toward compliance with mission system and infrastructure needs.

In line with the ISO 19770 IT asset management standard, tool providers have enhanced their basic products toward supporting the six ISO/IEC 19770-1 process areas:  control environment; planning & implementation; inventory; verification & compliance; operations management processes and interfaces; and a life-cycle process that interfaces with ISO/IEC 12207 and ISO/IEC 20000.

In addition, tool providers have significantly enhanced their products in recent years to provide more robust analytics, executive decision dashboards, and software license compliance reconciliation capability.   Auto-discovery and improved user interfaces are becoming standard fare for medium and large-size agencies.
