Federal & Industry Standards

The most critical body of standards impacting IT asset management is ISO/IEC 19770 published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to lend guidance around software asset management.

  • ISO/IEC 19770-1 was first published in May 2006.   It establishes international guidelines for effective software asset management governance processes.   This standard focuses on helping organizations reduce costs and risks by making process improvements in the critical areas of procurement, inventory tracking, and licensing compliance.

  • ISO/IEC 19770-2 is a proposed pending international standard expected to be published perhaps as soon as Fall 2009. A proposed final draft of the standard was disseminated for voting approval in September 2008 across standards experts in several countries.   Once approved, the standard will establish guidelines for effective software asset management through software identity tagging.

This standard will focus on allowing software publishers to digitally tag their products with information that uniquely identifies the product toward helping purchasing organizations to facilitate more effective software asset management through improved discovery and reconciliation mechanisms.

  • ISO/IEC 19770-3 is a new initiative conceived in May 2008 proposing international standards to guide entitlement tagging.   This effort is currently under development in a working group so no date of publication has been determined. This standard will focus on the digital recording of entitlement data to describe use rights, licensing terms, pricing, deployment guidelines and other terms and conditions agreed between software seller and purchaser.
