Commissioned Corps, Civil Service and Direct Tribal Hire employees working full time for IHS, Tribal, or Urban health programs are eligible to apply for an IHS Loan Repayment Program (LRP) Award. Recipients of a LRP award must agree to work for two continuous years in full-time clinical practice at that facility or in an approved Indian health program from the date an award is made. The LRP repays all - or a portion of - the new hire's eligible health professional educational loans up to $24,000 per year which includes an allocation for taxes.

In addition, individuals can apply to work at specific IHS sites that offer the Supplemental Loan Repayment Program (SLRP), in which the site funds the loan repayment. SLRP guarantees a loan repayment award worth up to $48,000 (including allocation for taxes) in exchange for a two-year agreement to practice at the participating site.
