DHPS GRANTS Educating, Recruiting and Retaining Health Professionals to Serve
in Indian Health Care Settings

Grant programs administered through the Indian Health Service (IHS) are designated partnerships between academic institutions and federal agencies for the purpose of training American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) health care professionals to serve in Indian health programs. These competitive five-year grant programs encourage AI/AN people to enter health care professions and help pave the way for their service in IHS and AI/AN communities.

Quentin N. Burdick American Indians into Nursing Program (Section 112)

Managed by IHS Division of Nursing, the Quentin N. Burdick American Indians into Nursing Program’s mission is to increase the number of nurses, nurse midwives and nurse practitioners who serve AI/AN communities. Section 112 graduate nurses are required to serve one year with IHS per year of scholarship support or the part-time equivalent of one year of service. The minimum service period for all nurses in the program is two years.

This grant program is administered through Arizona State University, Montana State University, Oglala Lakota College, Salish Kootenai College and University of North Dakota.

American Indians into Medicine Program (Section 114)

The American Indians into Medicine Program (INMED) aids AI/AN college students preparing for health care careers. INMED raises student awareness of health care career possibilities and provides resources such as tutoring, career counseling, scholarship and financial aid-application assistance as well as summer educational sessions and travel grants for health conference expenses.

INMED is administered through the University of Arizona and the University of North Dakota. Since 2004, more than 400 students at these schools have benefited from the diverse offerings of this program. In addition, INMED staff from both schools also participated in outreach efforts to surrounding Tribes and schools, distributing information about INMED, the universities themselves and careers in health care.
