U.S. Department of Labor announces $3 million grant to assist workers in Florida affected by recent storms and flooding

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $3 million grant to create approximately 300 temporary cleanup and recovery jobs because of Florida's recent severe storms and flooding.

"Spring storms hit Florida hard, resulting in flooding throughout the panhandle region," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. "Today's grant will create temporary jobs to help some area residents recover from the flooding's aftermath."

The Agency for Workforce Innovation will receive the grant. Temporary employees will assist with cleanup, demolition, repair, renovation and reconstruction of destroyed public structures, facilities and land within the affected area. The grant will also provide food, clothing, shelter and humanitarian assistance for those affected. For individuals who cannot find work after their temporary jobs end, funds may be used to provide core, intensive training services.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on April 21 declared the following 11 Florida counties eligible for FEMA's Public Assistance Program: Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Walton and Washington.

From the $3 million grant announced today, $1 million will be released initially. Additional funding up to the amount approved will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for disaster-related assistance.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information on National Emergency Grants, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
