U.S. Department of Labor announces a grant exceeding $329,000 to assist workers in Oregon affected by wood products industry layoffs

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $329,652 grant to assist approximately 50 workers affected by layoffs at Boise Cascade LLC in La Grande, Ore.

"Today's grant will provide the employment-related services necessary to help affected workers in Oregon find jobs in new careers and return to work as quickly as possible," said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.

The Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development will receive the grant. All workers targeted for this grant also have been certified as eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). Under this grant, in addition to receiving access to dislocated worker services, all affected workers will have access to services that are not available through the TAA program. These services include skills assessment, counseling, case management, job search assistance, job placement assistance and follow-up.

On Aug. 11, 2008, Boise Cascade announced publicly that layoffs were pending at the La Grande facility. Layoffs occurred on Aug.11, 2008, and Sept. 30, 2008.

The Oregon Consortium, a private-public partnership established by business leaders and local officials to revitalize the regional economy, will administer the grant.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
