Integrated Diabetes Education Recognition Program

Overview

The IHS Division of Diabetes (DDTP) administers the IHS Integrated Diabetes Education Recognition Program (IDERP). This program accredits quality diabetes self-management education (DSME) programs at IHS, Tribal, and Urban Indian health care facilities. Accreditation demonstrates to the public that your program meets the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education. In addition, Integrated Diabetes Education Recognition Program accreditation can qualify your program to seek reimbursement from Medicare. IHS is one of only two accrediting bodies with the authority to enable a program to seek Medicare reimbursement.

The IHS Integrated Diabetes Education Recognition Program provides guidance to develop quality diabetes self-management education programs with IHS, Tribal, and Urban health care facilities using a three-staged approach.

• Level 1 - Developmental Self-Assessment
  Achievement of all review criteria and indicators at this level provides your program with a framework to build the infrastructure and develop the processes necessary to sustain a quality diabetes self-management education program. A Level 1 (Developmental) Checklist is available to complete a self-assessment of your program’s readiness to apply for IHS Integrated Diabetes Education Program Recognition. At this level, no submission of an application is required and accreditation is not awarded.
• Level 2 - Diabetes Education Program Recognition
  Achievement of all review criteria and indicators at this level shows your community that your program is meeting all the standards for a quality diabetes self-management education program. At this level, an application for IHS Integrated Diabetes Education Program Recognition may be submitted. IHS Integrated Diabetes Education Program Recognition is awarded when there is documented evidence that your program meets all review criteria and indicators for Level 2 (Educational).
• Level 3 - Integrated Diabetes Program Recognition
  Achievement of all review criteria and indicators at this level shows your program provides exceptional diabetes education and care for your community by integrating public health, diabetes self-management education, and clinical services. The program must have Level 2 (Educational) accreditation prior to submitting a Level 3 (Integrated) application. IHS Integrated Diabetes Program Recognition is awarded when there is documented evidence that your program meets all review criteria and indicators for Level 3 (Integrated).

Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education

The standards for the IHS Integrated Diabetes Education Recognition Program are based on the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education (NSDSME) which were revised in 2007 to address current scientific evidence and expert consensus.
