About Us Welcome to the IHS Division of Diabetes Treatment and Prevention website. Type 2 diabetes has quickly emerged as one of the most serious and devastating health problems of our time. Although the growing diabetes epidemic threatens populations around the world, American Indians and Alaska Natives suffer disproportionately from the highest rates of diabetes in the United States. It is true that we face significant challenges in dealing with the diabetes epidemic, but the belief is strong among American Indian and Alaska Native communities that they are on the path to a diabetes-free future.
