One of the eight management priorities for the Indian Health Service (IHS) is focused on Eliminating Health Disparities through Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. Dr. Grim has established a Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HP/DP) Policy Advisory Committee to provide oversight and policy guidance to the agency. The charge to the HP/DP Policy Advisory Committee is to review the findings of an IHS Preventive Task Force and to determine priorities and policies to guide the Initiative; to identify partners both in the Federal and non-Federal arena; and to promote the findings and strategies across the IHS Tribal and urban programs.
The policy advisory committee will be made up of 12-14 federal and tribal leaders including representation from the National Institutes for Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the Office of the Secretary. There will also be representatives from businesses and foundations present on the committee. The federal co-chair of the committee is Mr. Don Davis, Area Director for the Phoenix Area, IHS. Lt. Governor Jefferson Keel from the Chickasaw Nation is the tribal co-chair. Other members include the following:
