Third Annual “Cranes for Kids” Festival on Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge
Saturday, October 13
To celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week, the Friends of the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuges, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Colorado Division of Wildlife, the Monte Vista Chamber of Commerce, and our partners are pleased to announce the third annual Kid’s Crane Festival.
Kids, bring your parents to Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday October 13 to enjoy the fresh fall air, migrating Sandhill cranes, food, fun, and educational activities. The festival kicks off at noon with a free barbeque lunch being served from noon to 1 p.m. Activities will start at 1:00 p.m. and will include a puppet show, watchable wildlife workshops, nest hunts, bird migration games, learning about the water cycle, and horse drawn wagon rides.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting and enhancing fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The Service manages the 95-million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System, which encompasses 540 national wildlife refuges, thousands of small wetlands and other special management areas. It also operates 69 national fish hatcheries, 64 fishery resource offices and 81 ecological services field stations. The agency enforces federal wildlife laws, administers the Endangered Species Act, manages migratory bird populations, restores nationally significant fisheries, conserves and restores wildlife habitat such as wetlands, and helps foreign governments with their conservation efforts. It also oversees the Federal Aid program that distributes hundreds of millions of dollars in excise taxes on fishing and hunting equipment to state fish and wildlife agencies.
