WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 1913, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009.
“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminds us in his Letter from Birmingham Jail that, ‘time is always ripe to do right.’ Today we recognize that the time is right to take a stand against hate and protect all Americans from violent acts of intolerance.
The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009 will help to protect all Americans against violence based on sexual orientation, race, religion, gender, national origin, disability, or gender identity, while also protecting our freedom of speech and association. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to help us usher into law this critical legislation.”
