Overview
The data used in creating the maps, charts, and graphs on this Web site may be downloaded in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet format (.xls) or comma-delimited text format (.txt).
Variables
- Geographic code (total US is always "99999")
- County: 5-digit FIPS code
- State economic area (SEA): 5-digit code consisting of 3-digit FIPS code preceded by "57"
- State: 2-letter US Postal Service (USPS) code
- R - Mortality rate per 100,000 person-years
- C - Number of deaths
- LB - lower bound of the 95% confidence interval on the mortality rate
- UB - upper bound of the 95% confidence interval on the mortality rate
File content
- County - 1 file per cancer (3,057 rows)
- SEA (state economic area) - 2 files per cancer, 1 for 5-year data and one for all other data (510 rows)
- State - 2 files per cancer, 1 for 5-year data and one for all other data (53 rows)
Column heading format: [V] [RG] [T] [A], where
V = variable: R, C, LB, or UB
RG = race / gender: BM, BF, WM, WF (B = black, W = white, F = female, M = male)
T = calendar time: 5094, 5069, 7094, and the 9 5-year periods 5054 through 9094
A = age group: blank (all ages), 019, 2049, 5074, 75+
Example:
RBM70942049 = rate for black males ages 20-49 for the time period 1970-1994
File name convention: [C][G] where
C = 3-letter code for the cancer
G = geographic region (county, SEA (state economic area), state)
Examples:
livcounty = liver at the county level
colsea5 = colon at the SEA level, 5-year data
