Chemical, Biological, Radiological, & Nuclear Countermeasures (CBRNC)
Mission: Identify, prioritize, and execute interagency chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear combating terrorism requirements and deliver technology solutions for detection, protection, mitigation, containment, and disposal.
Project Funding
Chemical, Biological, Radiological, & Nuclear Countermeasures represents ten percent of the TSWG FY08 program funding budget.
Funding targets projects that provide technical solutions to counter the terrorist’s use of CBRN materials.
Focus Area Product Catalogs
CBRNC focus areas reflect the prioritized requirements of the CBRN incident prevention and response community at large, this includes hazardous materials handlers, emergency medical services, and State and local fire departments and law enforcement agencies.
Detection
Detection sponsors projects that improve the sampling, detection, and analysis of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats in the air, water, food, and soil and on surfaces. Products center attention on new and innovative solutions that increase sensitivity and specificity, decrease response time, reduce false positives, harden detectors, decrease overall cost, and increase ease of use for CBRN sensor technologies. Detection efforts are coupled with development of novel sampling and analysis methods. Products
Information Resources
Information Resources sponsors projects that integrate shared information management tools that provide on-scene situational awareness and work to facilitate the integration of diverse emergency and consequence management elements. Products concentrate on the development of tools that model CBRN material behavior in indoor and outdoor environments; expand and enhance decision support and emergency response tools; study lethal dose and agent behavior in diverse food matrices; and develop tools that model foreign animal disease and zoonotic outbreaks. Products
Protection
Protection sponsors projects that operationally enhance individual and collective protection performance. Products focal points are the development and enhancement of low cost respiratory protection systems and personal protective equipment and clothing ensembles. Products also center on the development of decision support tools; architectural threat assessment tools; the development and evaluation of advanced filter materials; the development of communication tools for use in disaster situations; and the development of tools that provide shelter in lieu of evacuation. Products
Consequence Management
Consequence Management sponsors projects that research novel technologies and the procedures needed to mitigate life-threatening or destructive events. Focal points include response activity, the development of advanced equipment to counter the release of CBRN materials; research tools and techniques that are capable of characterizing the background levels of contamination. Products promote the improvement of equipment designed to return infrastructure functionality; foster sensors and intelligent communication tools research, and develop best practices and suggested protocols for effective consequence management.
