The Indian Health Diabetes Algorithm Cards were developed to provide clinicians with a quick reference to treatment algorithms based on national guidelines and the IHS Standards of Care for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (PDF – 654 KB). The cards were a collaborative effort between Indian Health System professionals and have been reviewed by the IHS Division of Diabetes (DDTP).
The Diabetes Algorithm Cards provide the new clinician with the basic information needed at the point of patient care and can provide the diabetes expert with a quick reference or reminder on medication dosing or treatment goals.
There are two versions of each Diabetes Algorithm Card. The first version is a word document that is 508 compliant (text-only version more accessible to visually-impaired users) and the second version is the algorithm card. Both versions can be adapted to include medications on your local formulary.
The Diabetes Algorithm Cards are designed to be printed front to back or folded in half, and are the width of an average lab coat pocket. Each card provides information on:
- Step-by-step management of the associated condition.
- Dosing, common adverse reactions, and contraindications for medications on the IHS National Core Formulary.
- Treatment targets and goals.
- Recommended monitoring parameters.
The information provided on this web site and in the Diabetes Algorithm Cards is intended to serve as a tool to enhance the information required in treating patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It is not a substitute for the knowledge and information provided by complete national guidelines or the IHS Diabetes Standards of Care. The algorithms will be updated periodically but changes in national practice may occur more quickly—users are advised to stay abreast of current clinical practice recommendations.
