Blast Effects and Mitigation (BX)
Mission: Identify, prioritize, and execute research and development projects that satisfy interagency and international requirements to define and mitigate the potential damage mechanisms from conventional and enhanced explosive mixtures to include homemade explosives. These projects address the protection of personnel, facilities, fortifications and critical infrastructure from blast effects.

BX focus areas reflect the prioritized requirements of Federal engineering activities responsible for high-risk facilities, the owners of critical infrastructure, and the needs of military personnel exploring new concepts in body armor and ballistic protection.
Advanced Instrumentation
Advanced Instrumentation sponsors projects that develop new, repeatable, and sustainable test protocols, instrumentation suites and models that capture and characterize the dynamic environment of emerging threats. Products use data and information from comprehensive instrumentation testing efforts to develop new protection and mitigation methodologies that specifically address enhanced novel explosives, including common terrorist homemade explosives used in improvised devices. Conventional and Enhanced Novel Explosive Mitigation
Conventional and Enhanced Novel Explosive Mitigation sponsors projects that investigate and characterize both conventional and novel explosives to fully understand potential novel explosive damage and identify mitigation strategies. Products promote the development, design, and construction of retrofit techniques for new and existing buildings, field fortifications, vehicles, and barriers to strengthen these structures and reduce debris hazards and structural collapse. Human Lethality in Blast Environment sponsors projects that characterize the effects of conventional and enhanced blast damage mechanisms to the human body. Products evaluate the effectiveness of blast prevention and mitigation concepts from an injury perspective and develop new methodologies to protect against blast fragmentation, fire, and overpressure injury. Critical Infrastructure Security
Critical Infrastructure Security sponsors projects that test and evaluate critical structural systems in buildings, bridges, tunnels, and other critical infrastructure components using both blast simulation and full-scale blast testing. Products assess the level of protection that is sufficient to mitigate various threats that enable military planners and stakeholders in critical transportation systems to make decisions that are more informed.
