Research Project:
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF RAINBOW TROUT LINES AND TRIPLOID RAINBOW TROUT
Location: Leetown, West Virginia
Project Number: 1930-31000-007-06
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jul 15, 2008
End Date: Jul 14, 2009
Objective:
General Objective: To measure and compare growth and physiological performance of selected crosses of rainbow trout and to compare performance of diploid and triploid fish from selected family lines and stocks.
Specific Objectives:
(1) To evaluate strains or stocks of rainbow trout and other fish species for adaptation to diets containing grains and plant protein ingredients.
(2) To evaluate performance of diploid and triploid rainbow trout from selected family lines and crosses under production and experimental conditions.
Approach:
A series of studies will be conducted over the five years of this project. First, feeding trials will be conducted using selected family lines and strains of rainbow trout provided by the NCCCWA to assess difference in performance under ideal rearing conditions where differences can emerge and be measured. Second, selected strains will be reared under laboratory conditions and fed experimental diets differing in source of protein (plant versus fish meal), differences in oil source (plant versus fish oil), density and other environmental or experimental conditions to measure growth, feed and health performance. Third, if warranted, selected lines or ploidys will be reared under commercial production conditions to assess performance.
