American Law Reports

American Law Reports, commonly referred to as ALRs, are a series of annotations published by Lawyer's Cooperative. ALRs provide legal researchers with a continuing series of timely annotations that collect, organize, and evaluate all case law relevant to a specific and narrow point of law.

Westlaw offers access to free American Law Reports (ALR) resources on its website ( http://west.thomson.com/alr/resources/ ). Included are the most recent ALR annotations and topics. Features include:

  • E-Annos: A list of (ALR) electronic annotations, sorted by topic. Some of the more than 50 topics covered are Labor & Employment, Limitation of Actions, and Workers Compensation.
  • Critical Issues Guides: Available for Employment Discrimination, Federal Criminal Law & Procedure, Freedom of Information Act, and other topics.

  • ALR Alert Center: The free newsletter provides subscribers with the most recent ALR annotations and previews of upcoming topics. Each newsletter includes a topical index of new annotations.

In addition, West currently provides access to ALR’s 2005-2006 United States Supreme Court Update: Part I. Included are grants or denials of certiorari as well as opinions for each topic. Each summary is followed by a citation to a related annotation in ALR. Some of the topics covered are Labor & Employment, Securities Regulations, and Workers Compensation. Several ALR databases are accessible through Westlaw with your password and User ID. A few of these databases include:

  • American Law Reports, ALR, an online version of the American Law Reports that contains the full text of annotations included in the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Federal, and Federal Second Series and the ALR Index.

  • American Law Reports - Business Organizations, ALR-BUS, contains the full text of annotations dealing with Business Organizations found in the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Federal and Federal 2d Series.

To obtain a listing of all ALR databases, see the past tip Westlaw Database Directory.

For those who prefer to use ALR in print, the Wirtz Labor Law Library has in its collection several of the ALR resources available online through Westlaw, including the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Federal, and Federal Second Series. The law library also has ALR Digest of Decisions and Annotations.
