BRB Publications, Inc. <http://www.brbpub.com/default.asp> is a publisher of sourcebooks used for locating public records. While most of BRB’s resources are accessible only through a paid subscription, BRB’s Free Resource Center <http://www.brbpub.com/pubrecsites.asp> provides a searchable list of free public record sites along with additional tools to locate sources for civil records, criminal records, driving records, real estate records, public record vendors, record retrievers, legislation and more. Resources are divided into categories and highlights include:

  • Free Government Public Record Sites: Includes listings of and links to State, County, and City Sites, State Occupational Licensing Boards, Federal Sites, Unclaimed Funds, U.S. Territories, and Military Sites.
  • Federal Courts: Provides links to Electronic Access & Information Sites such as the U.S. Party Case Index. If you click on the Federal Records Center links, you are directed to a PDF document that describes the process of storing records from older federal cases and where these older materials can be found, according to district.
  • Laws and Legislation: Provides access to State Legislative Sites for Legislative Bill Searching & Monitoring, State Statutes and Codes as well as State Court Systems and Appellate & Supreme Court Opinions & Decisions. Also included are links to resources related to Employment Screening, the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 (FCRA) and State Laws, Employment Screening Forms, FCRA Documents (includes links to the full-text of the FCRA and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Staff Opinion Letters), and a State Criminal Record Repository Limitations Chart.
  • Social Security Numbers and EINs: A link to the SSN Death Index from RootsWeb.com is provided. This is a searchable database that allows you to search using any or all of the following criteria: last name, first name, middle name, and SSN. Searches retrieve the following information free of charge: name, date of birth, date of death, last residence, date of last benefit, and the SSN issued.

In addition to the resources noted above, you can subscribe to "Public Record Update", <http://www.brbpub.com/articles.asp> a free monthly electronic newsletter from BRB that reports on changes and current events affecting the Public Record industry. Enter your e-mail address and click on the Subscribe button at the bottom of the page. An Archive of the previous and current year's issues is provided <http://www.brbpub.com/pubrecupdates.asp>.
