Historic Preservation Program
GSA's real estate inventory consists of numerous buildings that are important due to their architectural and historical significance. The National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 calls for federal agencies to identify, conserve and facilitate initiatives that foster the conservation and continued use of historic buildings in the public and private sector.
GSA's Northeast and Caribbean Region Historic Preservation Office is committed to providing customers with excellent service relating to all aspects of preservation. The office is most effective when involved in all stages of preservation or renovation projects. Services include:
- guidance on all aspects of building renovation and preservation;
- implementation of compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act; and
- technical architectural expertise relating to building renovation and preservation, including advice and assistance on preservation matters.

Preserving the heritage of the nation’s historic properties for future generations is important to GSA. Therefore, GSA provides technical and strategic expertise to promote the viability, reuse, and care of historic buildings that GSA owns and leases.
The Northeast and Caribbean Region is home to many historic buildings, including the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House; a National Historic Landmark in New York City. The Michael J. Dillon U.S. Courthouse in Buffalo and the Jose V. Toledo U.S. Post Office and Courthouse in Puerto Rico are both on the National Register of Historic Places. GSA also manages historic border stations in New York State. These buildings, which represent many periods and styles, enrich our sense of community and give solidity to the federal government within the region.
