Read No Evil, See No Evil (Opinion)
On April 29, Military.com ran a new piece Winslow Wheeler wrote on the F-22 and the F-35. This piece argues the new justification for these aircraft - jobs - is almost as weak as the claim that they assist the national defense. This piece was offered to newspapers in three states that have major pork interests in both aircraft. The editors at The Hartford Courant (Connecticut)and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (Georgia) did not bother to reply; the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (Texas) did, at least, have the courtesy to respond, saying they did not have the space for it. Can it really be that so few in those regions want to read a perspective other than the opinions of local politicians with an insatiable appetite for more pork at any price?

What "Sweeping Reforms" in DOD?
(Analysis)
In the aftermath of Secretary of Defense Robert Gates' April 6 decisions on 50 Pentagon programs and policies, business-as-usual in the Defense Department is alive and well. That is the unavoidable conclusion when you consider how Gates took some bad advice to balance his excellent decision to stop further production of the F-22. While cancelling the F-22, he also recommended a continuation of the disastrous F-35 program as previously planned by the Pentagon's outgoing acquisition managers. Pierre Sprey and Winslow Wheeler explain in a new piece in the May 6, 2009 Jane's Defence Weekly.

The Other Meltdown: Little to Show for Huge Defense Budgets (Opinion)
The financial and economic collapse, our deeply flawed healthcare system, the gridlock in Washington, two long wars not going well, and long-term, fundamental problems with energy and Social Security do not complete the list of raging crises the new president must face. Add the ever expanding cost of America's shrinking, aging, less ready military forces, now approaching the meltdown stage. The nature of the problems our defenses face and the basic nature of some possible real solutions are outlined in a commentary Winslow Wheeler wrote for the Nov. 3, 2008 issue of Defense News.

Missile Defense in Poland a Frivolous Move (Opinion)
Russia’s use of SS-21 ballistic missiles in the recent conflict with Georgia and Iran’s series of missile tests earlier this summer created two very big misconceptions among missile defense supporters. In a recent article for the Citizen-Times, CDI Senior Analyst Victoria Samson analyzes these misconceptions and outlines how they have laid the foundation for a future U.S. foreign policy blunder that could have long-term and grave consequences.

Countdown to Air Force Cyber Command Stopped (Analysis)
Air Force Cyber Command (AFCYBER) was intended to become operational Oct. 1, 2008, but the launch of this controversial command has been halted. The Air Force's new leadership has wisely decided to evaluate the command's mission, capabilities and size to be sure that if continued, it will be a reasonable and legitimate command. Although all efforts related to AFCYBER have been suspended, many Air Force officials are confident the command will continue. The Air Force's new Chief of Staff along with the Joint Chiefs of Staff should have a decision on AFCYBER this month. CDI Research Assistant Chelsea Dilley analyzes this recent halt in Air Force Cyber Command development.
