New England Region Community Outreach Programs

Good Neighbor Program

Through the Good Neighbor Program, GSA creates green space near federal buildings, supports local business development in plazas and retail space, shares resources and participates in local business improvement districts. GSA has built a tradition of creating places for people to engage with one another.

Historic Neighborhood Program

Through the Historic Neighborhood Program, GSA employees mentor high school students providing them with an in depth look at the history behind urban neighborhoods. Also highlighted are the many opportunities available within the federal government in the fields of design and construction, computer design, and documentation.

Public Realm

When possible, GSA designs meaningful space within federal buildings that visitors and community organizations can use for cultural and educational purposes. Public Realm space includes restaurant and cafeterias; assembly rooms; public exhibition space; lobby and rotunda areas. At the John J. Moakley United States Courthouse, a two-acre waterfront park is also available for events and activities. The waterfront area also provides an extension of the Harborwalk and a waterfront dock for visiting vessels.

Harbor Island Alliance

Our partnership with the Harbor Island Alliance and the National Parks Service includes cooperative dock usage at the John J. Moakley United States Courthouse, program promotion, and provides the location for the Harbor Islands Discovery Center. Through this partnership GSA attracts investment and support, coordinates activities sponsored by the private sector, and provides strategic and financial resources to insure greater use of the Boston Harbor Islands national park area.

Federal Property for Public Uses

Federal properties that are no longer needed by the federal government may be made available for public uses to state and local governments, regional agencies, or non-profit organizations. Public uses for properties are those that are accessible to and can be shared by all members of a community, and include community centers, schools and colleges, parks, municipal buildings, and many others.

James D. St. Clair Court Education Project

GSA has partnered with the James D. St. Clair Court Education Project and Emcor at the John J. Moakley United States Courthouse to promote the Public Realm; courthouse activities and functions; and provide informative building tours for the general public. The project’s primary goal is to educate citizens about civic responsibility by teaching about justice and democracy.

Michigan Lighthouse Project

Two-thirds of Michigan's lighthouses currently under federal ownership are scheduled for disposal within the next decade. To facilitate this grand undertaking, the Michigan Lighthouse Project was created.
