Thirty Years of Service
1979-2009

On this page:

Welcome to LVC
(Formerly known as The Low Vision Information Center)

The Low Vision Center is a nonprofit organization that helps people with low vision maintain their independence. Located in Bethesda, Maryland, we offer information services as well as a home-like demonstration area full of a variety of low vision aids and ideas.

The Low Vision Center offers its resources without charge, relying entirely upon personal contributions to fund its varied services.

I invite you to browse our web site for more information about our services, as well as helpful hints for improving your vision. Some examples include:

I also invite you to make an appointment to visit our demonstration area so you can examine our low vision aids, including magnifiers, CCTV's, Zoom Text, and non-optical adaptive aids (such as talking clocks and writing guides). We also sell a select group of low vision aids and Bausch & Lomb, Coil, Eschenbach, and Schweitzer magnifiers. Please don't hesitate to call us for additional information or to make an appointment for a visit.  Appointments are usually scheduled after 10:30 a.m., Monday through Wednesday.

Interested in traveling someplace near or far?  On Saturday, May 2, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, the Davis library will present a panel discussion, "Traveling with Disabilities."  Panelists include travelers as well as a travel agent.  Come to get and share ideas and practical tips.

The Davis Library is located at 6400 Democracy Boulevard, near Old Georgetown Road.  There are two entrances on the upper level of the parking lot.

TUG May 9

The Technology Users Group (TUG) will meet Saturday, may 9 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Maryland Library for the Blind, 415 Park Ave., Baltimore.  (Note the later start time.)  This month's topic is "netbooks."

Before you buy your next computer or note taker you may want to check out the affordable netbooks. They are cheaper than a laptop and have more functionality than a note taker. See what they can and cannot do on Saturday.

"Birding for the Blind" May 30

On Saturday, May 30, from 8:00 a.m. through 11:00 a.m., the Patuxent Research Refuge will present a program designed specifically for visually impaired people and their families (or friends) ages 8 through adult.  The program will introduce VIPs to nature and birding through hands-on activities and exploration of outdoor habitats.  Participants will learn how to identify birds by sound, an activity that can be done in any outdoor setting - like their own backyard!

The program is free, but advance registration is required; for more information or to register please call 301-497-5630.

The National Wildlife Visitor Center is located off of Powder Mill Rd. between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 197, south of Laurel.

Summer Braille Program for Low Vision Kids

Braille Enrichment for Literacy and non-visual Learning (BELL) Summer Program

Are you the parent, guardian, or teacher of a low vision child who is just learning Braille?  Here is a wonderful opportunity for them this summer.

The BELL summer program is a two-week day program (weekends not included) designed to offer pre-kindergarten and elementary age low vision beginning Braille readers an opportunity to be immersed in Braille and increase the use of tactile skills for reading Braille.  Children will receive Braille instruction daily as well as learn alternative techniques through arts and crafts, games, field trips, and other fun activities.

A parent seminar will be held to offer parents practical strategies to incorporate non-visual learning and Braille into their children's daily life.

This program will be led by three certified teachers.

Program Dates: August 3 - August 15, 2009 (week days only)
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Location: National Federation of the Blind
National Center for the Blind
1800 Johnson Street
Baltimore Maryland 21230

This program is sponsored by the National Federation of the Blind of Maryland in conjunction with the Maryland Parents of Blind Children.
