Herbert Hoover Dike - Lake Okeechobee

Stand atop Lake Okeechobee's Herbert Hoover Dike along US 27/80, about 2 miles southeast of Clewiston, and enjoy the sunny day. Sugarcane fields can be seen on one side of the dike. Turn and see Lake Okeechobee and some artificial islands on the other side.

When the photo is first loaded you are looking from the dirt trail that gently winds atop the Herbert Hoover Dike along US 27/80, about 2 miles southeast of Clewiston, down the slope of the Dike, which is covered with short, green grasses. At the bottom of the Dike are the waters of Lake Okeechobee’s Rim Canal. Beyond the canal waters, dead Australian melaleuca trees stand atop some artificial islands near the Lake’s shore.

Navigating to the right, the Rim Canal and glimpses of Lake Okeechobee are seen to the left of the Dike and sugarcane fields are seen to the right. Continuing to the right, beyond US 27/80, sugarcane fields bordered by tall trees stretch to the horizon.

As you continue the 360-degree turn to the image’s starting point, sugarcane fields are seen to the left of the Dike and the Rim Canal and artificial islands are seen to the right.

Navigating up with your mouse, you can see a blue, partly cloudy sky. Navigating down, you see the South Florida Information Access (SOFIA) web site logo, which is linked to the SOFIA main page (http://sofia.usgs.gov).
