Housing Authority of Plainfield

 Information by State
 Print version

The Housing Authority of Plainfield began the CHSP program in 1981 and is still serving the frail elderly. Working with residents who are in need of special supportive services, in order to maintain independent living in a familiar environment, is one of the goals of the program. Other goals include crisis intervention, transportation to medical appointments, and housekeeping services.

The programs coordinator, a Home Economist, is also the Manager of the building that houses the program. This enables the program to flow more efficiently because there is a handle on many situations that would otherwise involve a longer waiting period in order to resolve.

Referrals come from different sources; managerial, family, hospital, staff, and often times the residents themselves.

The meals component of the program serves each person seven days a week, 365 days a year, including the holidays, and has 40 participants. The meals are hot and nutritious as well as appealing. Housekeeping/Personal
Assistance has 11 clients.

CHSP offers a foot doctor and a medical doctor on a monthly basis, who both provide preventative health services. Our Speakers Bureau delivers informative presentations geared at disseminating vital health care, eye care, safety, and medical information. With the new Medicare Programs, i.e. parts C & D, the confusion among seniors increases. Professionals are asked to present and explain the new rules to participants.

The Congregate Housing Program works in conjunction with a new initiative developed by the Housing Authority: The Family First Program. A Social Worker, a resident Community Liaison, Psychologist, and a Nutritionist are available to residents upon request. We also participate in a program created by the city of Plainfield - The Sick and Shut-In Council, which delivers flowers and other treats to our clients on special holidays.
