Indexes to Part 180 Tolerance Information for Pesticide Chemicals in Food and Feed Commodities
On this webpage you will find two indexes to assist you in locating specific pesticide tolerance information that is contained in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) at Part 180. This indexes are intended to help registrants, scientists, importers, trade associations, extension agents and others with an interest in pesticide tolerance information identify:
- Tolerances (maximum residue levels) or exemptions from tolerance requirements for a food or feed commodity
- Pesticide chemicals that belong to a particular pesticide type or pesticide family
Note: Pesticide tolerance information is updated in the Code of Federal Regulations on a weekly basis. EPA plans to update these indexes biannually. These indexes are current as of the date indicated in the pdf file. For the latest information on pesticide tolerances, please check the electronic Code of Federal Reguations (eCFR).
Provided on this page is information which may be used to assist you in searching for pesticide tolerance information, provide additional information, and contact information.

Searching by Pesticide Common Name
The Common Names Index is an alphabetical list of pesticide chemicals by pesticide common name. The information is provided in table format as follows:
- Pesticide common name
- Section in 40 CFR part 180 with detailed tolerance information, e.g., tolerance for specific commodities, tolerances with regional registrations
- Whether a tolerance or an exemption has been set
- CAS registry number
- CAS index name
- Pesticide type
- Pesticide family
- EPA PC code
How do I search for a pesticide common name in this index?
- Open the Common Names Index - August 4, 2008 (36 pp, 914k, About PDF) file
- On the toolbar, click the SEARCH button or choose Edit --> Search
- Type the "pesticide common name" that you want to search
- Click SEARCH
- The search results will appear in a box immediately below and list by page the order of the references found
- Click the item(s) from the search results list to display the pesticide tolerance information for your selection in the index
An example illustrating how to this index.
For example, if you were looking for pesticide "Diazinon" tolerance information. You would scan the "Pesticide Common Name" column for "Diazinon". You would see that there are two rows of information for this pesticide. Reading the information across each of the rows you would obtain the following:
- §180.153 of 40 CFR part 180 contains the detailed tolerance information
- Tolerance requirements for Diazinon have been set
- CAS number is 333-41-5
- CAS index name is O,O-diethyl O-[6-methyl-2-(1-methylethyl)-4-pyrimidinyl] phosphorothioate
- Pesticide type is both acaricides and insecticides
- Pesticide family is organophosphorus
- EPA PC code is 057801

Searching by Pesticide Types and Families
The Pesticide Type Index is an alphabetical list of pesticide chemicals by pesticide type and family. Each type of pesticide is associated with one or more families of pesticides. The information is provided in table format as follows:
- Pesticide type
- Pesticide family
- Pesticide common name
- Section in 40 CFR part 180 with detailed tolerance information
- Whether a tolerance or an exemption has been set
- CAS registry number
- CAS index name

For example, if you were looking for pesticide family "organotin" of pesticide type "acaricide" tolerance information. You would scan the "Pesticide Type" column for "acaricide" and then continue down the next column ("Pesticide Type") until you found pesticide family "organotin", and read the information across that row to obtain the following:
- Pesticide type is acaricides
- Pesticide family is organotin
- Pesticide common name is cyhexatin
- §180.144 of 40 CFR part 180 contains the detailed tolerance information
- A tolerance has been set
- CAS registry number is 13121-70-5
- CAS index name is tricyclohexylhydroxystannane
- EPA PC code is 101601

Questions about Pesticide Types and Families
Pesticides are often categorized based on the type of pest they control. For example, the pesticide type "herbicides" kill weeds and other plants that grow where they are not wanted. Pesticides are also categorized by the chemical family to which they belong; these families are based on similarities in chemical structures, modes of action, and chemical properties. For example, malathion, parathion, and phosaline belong to the pesticide family "organophosphorus."
What do "Reserved" and "Not Found" mean in these indexes?
"Reserved" is used by the Federal Register to indicate the section, e.g., 180.373, is available for tolerance information pertaining to a new pesticide chemical.
"Not Found" indicates that the information was not readily available from the sources used to supplement the existing information in the alphabetical finding aid in the July 1, 2007, edition of 40 CFR part 180.
Users of the indexes will be directed to the detailed pesticide tolerance information in Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR). The detailed information for each pesticide residue and its metabolites includes:
- Tolerances for different agricultural commodities
- Time-limited tolerances (such as Section 18 exemptions)
- Tolerances with regional limitations
- Indirect or inadvertent residues
