Applying Space-based Remote Sensing to Transportation Problems

By mounting imaging and radar sensors on aircraft or satellites, remote sensing allows for observing the Earth's surface with increasingly fine resolution, including the transportation system. The images obtained can then be used for making detailed maps. For the past two years, the Volpe Center has assisted the Research and Special Programs Administration, the Department of Transportation (DOT) Office of the Secretary, and a multimodal Remote Sensing Working Group in implementing the requirements of TEA-21, Sec. 5113. The DOT teamed up with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in developing and demonstrating the value of commercial remote sensing geospatial information to enhance safety and environmental quality in transportation planning, construction, and operations.

During the first year, the Volpe Center prepared a series of technical briefings by industry and research leaders and a white paper. The Center organized helped and conduct a National Forum on Transportation Applications of Remote Sensing to engage other federal agencies, industry, and university experts, as well as the transportation community in defining the most pressing needs for remote sensing applications. Further, it supported a university outreach program to determine long-range research and education priorities in remote sensing. In the second year, Center staff participated in the review, ranking, and selection of proposals from university consortia for multi-year research and development, and from companies for near- term technology demonstrations of remote sensing utility in priority transportation areas.

In the future, Center staff will be: serving as a technical monitor on project awards; helping to organize, conduct, and report on outreach events; monitoring national commercial and federal technology developments and data resources valuable to the DOT program and new partnership opportunities; preparing briefings and presenting status updates as needed; assisting the Transportation Research Board's Committees in preparing a research circular and training for the transportation community; and assisting in the development of a dedicated Web page and brochures on the DOT program.
