Ukrainian Media Partnership Launches New Safer Sex Campaign
On November 28, 2008 the Ukrainian Media Partnership (UMP) to Combat HIV/AIDS project, supported by USAID and implemented by IREX in collaboration with Transatlantic Partners Against AIDS (TPPA), held a press event for Kyiv journalists called StopAIDS: Affects Everyone. The gathering publicized collaboration between government, business and non-governmental sectors in fighting HIV/AIDS epidemic and announced a new awareness campaign on safer sex.
Alla Sherbynska, Director of the Ukrainian AIDS Center, provided an overview of the trends and the current status of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Ukraine and globally, shared successes and shortcomings of the effective National HIV/AIDS program.
Journalists were also introduced to the “Sex Has to be Safe” campaign, the product of a new cross-sector partnership established in UMP by Sanoma Magazines Ukraine and MTV Ukraine TV-Channel. The campaign utilizes well-known Ukrainian athletes and musicians to promote safe sexual practices among youth. This collaboration has leveraged support from the Coca-Cola Company and the German Society for Technical Cooperation to produce a variety of targeted print, radio, and TV public service announcements (PSAs), metro lights posters, city lights, and 40,000 leaflets distributed on World AIDS Day (December 1) at cinemas Kinoplats, Brocard, and Levi’s stores in Ukraine’s largest cities.
