Virus and Prion Diseases of Livestock Research Unit

"In the Virus and Prion Diseases of Livestock Research Unit we identify and characterize viruses and prions (abnormal disease causing proteins) associated with economically important diseases of livestock and develop methods to control or eradicate (eliminate) these diseases. Our goals include:

  • Develop diagnostic tests
  • Understand the development of specific diseases
  • Develop vaccines to control viral infections
  • Define the prevalence and economic impact of emerging viral diseases

In addition we will continue to cooperate closely with field veterinarians, university scientists and diagnosticians, federal regulatory officials, as well as livestock producers and their national organizations in diagnosing and controlling economically important virus- and prion-induced diseases of livestock."
