Memorial to Thomas Jefferson
 

The Memorial to Thomas Jefferson will be created on existing federal land within the boundaries of Cape Disappointment State Park. The memorial would be approximately 20 acres in size and owned and managed by the National Park Serice as a part of Lewis and Clark National and State Historical Parks.

The developed portion of the memorial would be a fraction of the 20 acres and located to utilize existing visitor service facilities associated with the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. Currently no funding exists for the planning or design of the Memorial To Thomas Jefferson.

This photograph is a present-day view west of the Pacific Ocean from the approximate location of the proposed Memorial to Thomas Jefferson. The land below the bluffs is actually accreted sand deposits behind a jetty wall that was built in the 1930’s to improve safety for navigation at the mouth of the Columbia River.
 
Thomas Jefferson, the country’s third president, envisioned a nation from “sea to shining sea,” and the Memorial To Thomas Jefferson would commemorate that vision. The memorial would be located near the Lewis and Clark Information Center overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The visitor would gain an understanding of the fulfillment of Jefferson’s dream for the Nation through the relationship between this site and the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri.

The location of the memorial will be desgned to utilize the existing visitor service facilities associated with the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center.

The area where the Saltmakers made camp is in present day Seaside, Oregon. Seaside is approximately 15 miles away from Fort Clatsop. It was the first place which provided firewood, rocks, fresh water, game animals and good neighbors.
