Winter 2009

Deer Creek Backcountry Hike …
At 1:00 pm, on January 17, February 21, and March 28, join a ranger for a two-hour, one-mile hike into the steep, trail-less, and rocky, Deer Creek basin near Goose Rock.  The hike features the geology as well as the flora and fauna of the basin.  Participants should first meet at the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center, located at the Sheep Rock Unit of the monument.  Sturdy hiking shoes, water, and appropriate clothing are recommended.

Horse Family Tree Workshop …
At 1:00 pm, on December 27, January 10, and March 21, bring your family for a three hour, hands-on workshop studying fossils from the surprising horse family tree.  Participants should meet at the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center.  The workshop is designed for students fourteen years old and above, so younger kids should be accompanied by a participating adult.  The workshop is limited to the first 20 people, and reservations may be made.  Please call Ranger John Fiedor at 541-987-2333 to make a reservation.

Star Gazing with your Valentine…
On February 14, at 6:00 pm, bring your valentine for a two hour exploration of the starry night sky.  Binoculars and warm clothing are recommended for this outdoor program, and refreshments and a warming room will be provided.  The program begins at the picnic area within the Painted Hills Unit of the park, and requires a reservation.  Families are welcome.  Please call Ranger Amy Poff at 541-987-2333 to make a reservation.  (May be postponed due to cloud cover.)

All programs are subject to change.  Please call
for the most current schedule.
