NIBIB "GO" Grant Funding Opportunities

NIBIB-specific information for responding to the Request for Applications: RFA-OD-09-004
Under the Recovery Act, the NIBIB is participating in an NIH established program entitled Research and Research Infrastructure "Grand Opportunities" hereafter called the "GO" grants program. This new program will support projects that address large, biomedical and biobehavioral research endeavors that will benefit from significant 2-year funds without the expectation of continued NIH funding beyond two years. The research supported by the "GO" grants program should have high impact, and a high likelihood of enabling growth and investment in biomedical research and development, public health, and health care delivery. The “GO” grants program will support large-scale research projects that accelerate critical breakthroughs, early and applied research on cutting-edge technologies, and new approaches to improve the synergy and interactions among multi and interdisciplinary research teams. The initiative seeks novel approaches in areas that address specific knowledge gaps, scientific opportunities, new technologies, data generation, or research methods that would benefit from an influx of funds to quickly advance the area in significant ways. Applicants may propose to address either a specific research question or propose the creation of a unique infrastructure/resource designed to accelerate scientific progress in the future. In addition to the information in the Guide Notice, below are NIBIB-specific details which should be considered in preparing a proposal for the NIBIB. A submission that is not directly responsive to the NIBIB funding priorities will not be considered for funding.
NIBIB Funding Priorities:
- Health Information Technology
NIBIB will support research on information technology to enable the sharing of radiology images across health care institutions and vendor systems. Image data sharing should improve the quality of patient care by making comprehensive image data sets immediately available. It should reduce health care costs by increasing the speed and accuracy of data on which medical decisions are based, and by reducing imaging redundancy and overutilization. A key design feature is for the patient to control the access to and sharing of the images. NIBIB encourages applications to test the feasibility of developing and implementing such image data sharing systems for rural or underserved populations as well as academic patient care environments.
- Point-of-Care Systems
NIBIB will accept applications for the development of 'point of care' diagnostic systems. Such systems must be capable of providing diagnostic information at the initial point of contact with a health care provider in a time frame consistent with a single visit for diagnosis and initiation of treatment. Systems designed for use in underserved settings are particularly encouraged.
- Evaluating Image-Guided Minimally-Invasive Therapeutic Interventions
NIBIB invites proposals to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of new image-guided therapies for oncologic and non-oncologic disorders. Evaluation should provide objective, quantitative measures of the effectiveness of the image guided intervention in advance of clinical outcomes. Approaches should substantially advance current methodologies and be non-invasive or only minimally invasive and can involve new imaging and/or sensor applications including hybrid and parametric imaging in conjunction with radiofrequency ablation, ultrasound therapy, cryoablation, targeted drug delivery or surgical therapies, etc. They may also include endoscopic or catheter-mediated measurements. Proposals should focus on the evaluation of image-guided treatments that have the potential to significantly improve disease outcome and public health.
Anticipated Resources:
- Funds will be limited for this program. NIBIB anticipates having a total of approximately $4M available for the two years and to make up to four Grand Opportunities awards.
