Research Project: Development of a Large Number of Snp Markers to Enhance Genetic Selection and Identify Genes Affecting Production and Health Traits in Swine

Location: Reproduction Research

Project Number: 5438-31000-083-06
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 15, 2008
End Date: Aug 14, 2010

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to collaboratively develop a high density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) assay for pigs: Custom Infinium Porcine Genotyping BeadChip ("BeadChip").

Approach:
As many as 60,000 SNP genetic markers will be identified and selected collaboratively to develop an assay for application to pigs. Illumina will provide to the USDA, Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (ARS) as described in this agreement, assay development, and reagents necessary to genotype pigs and the appropriate technical support. ARS will use the BeadChip to genotype swine populations. Collaboratively, genotypes will be used to implement whole-genome selection and high-density quantitative trait locus mapping.
