Construction and Demolition

Construction and demolition (C&D) debris is a large and varied waste stream that includes concrete, asphalt, wood, drywall (sheetrock, gypsum, or plaster), metals, bricks, glass, plastics, and asphalt shingles generated from construction, renovation, and demolition of buildings. C&D debris is also generated during construction of roads and other public works projects.  C&D debris is generally made up of non-hazardous material, however, hazardous materials, such as asbestos, lead, and mercury may also be generated. These materials must be handled and disposed of properly. For more specific information on state and local requirements and programs for C&D debris management, see Region 5 State and Tribal Links.
Disposing of construction and demolition (C&D) debris misuses valuable resources and shortens the life of landfills. Alternatives to C&D debris disposal can save money in avoided disposal fees and potentially generate income from the sales of salvageable materials.
In recent years, numerous efforts have been underway to reduce the environmental impact of construction and demolition projects.  Recycling C&D debris is a focus of the of the Resource Conservation Challenge’s (RCC) Reuse and Recycling of Industrial Materials national priority area.  The Region 5 Solid Waste Program also has expertise in C&D debris disposal management.

For information on state and local requirements and programs for C&D debris management, see EPA Region 5 State Links.
