No Further Action Needed at Former UST Facility, Walthill Underground Storage Tanks Project, Walthill, Nebraska

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 and the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) have determined that no further action is needed at the Former Urbanec Service facility. This is one of three UST (underground storage tank) locations in Walthill, Nebraska.

Starting August 23rd, the public may view the decision documents at the Walthill Public Library and Omaha Tribe Environmental Protection Office. See next column for details.

BACKGROUND

EPA and NDEQ discovered petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater samples at the three former UST facilities in Walthill when the tanks were removed several years ago. The three former UST facilities are:

The three owners were required to conduct additional soil and groundwater sampling to find out contamination levels and locations. EPA installed 23 groundwater wells and five soil borings to sample the soil. For the Former Urbanec facility, the groundwater and soil samples revealed that the benzene and MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether) chemical concentrations are below the human health and environment risk-based screening levels. These findings support the no further action decision at the Former Urbanec facility.

Also, EPA and NDEQ are requiring more groundwater and soil sampling data for the Former Walthill Standard and Former Pump and Pack facilities. EPA and NDEQ have notified the owners and will work with them to make sure work is completed.
