ANRI Lab Change - EMBUL

As of October 1, 2005, EQL has combined with AMBL to create the new lab EMBUL, Environmental Mangement and ByProduct Utilization Laboratory.

2005 Chesapeake Bay Day - CBD was a great success!!

Presentations, demonstrations, and tours showcased BARC’s unique research contributions promoting agricultural production systems that protect soil, water, and air quality. In addition, there was a signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between BARC, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and a consortium of nine Land Grant universities. This MOU will formally unite the land-based research community within the watershed as we move collaboratively forward toward meeting the Chesapeake 2000 Agreement’s Keystone Commitments to restore the Bay by 2010. This leadership agreement will provide a working infrastructure to improve the efficiencies of management practices and seeking innovative solutions for reducing pollution to the Bay.

Poultry Groundbreaking Ceremony - Many thanks to all those who were able to come out!

Congressman Steny Hoyer and other invited guests participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for a new poultry research facility. The new $5.2 million facility is over 28,100 square feet and is designed to meet current industry and research animal care standards for housing chickens and turkeys. (Sept. 05)

2005 ANRI Outside Awards- Congratulations ANRI Employees!!

TRAVEL GRANT: Sara Wright (SASL). Invited to speak and demonstrate quantification of glomalin to associations of Australian no-till farmers in Western Australia, South Australia, and New South Whales during the month of February 2005. (January 26, 2005)

FELLOW AMERICAN METEROLOGICAL SOCIETY AWARD: Thomas J. Jackson (HRSL). Fellows have made outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic sciences or their applications during a substantial period of years. New Fellows are elected each year from a slate submitted by the Fellows Committee of not more than two-tenths of 1 percent of all AMS Members. (Jan. 16, 2005)

PFIZER ANIMAL HEALTH PHYSIOLOGY AWARD: Anthony V. Capuco (BFGL). The award is to recognize outstanding research in dairy cattle physiology. It is sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health. (July 2005)

NORTHEAST ADSA-ASAS YOUGH SCIENTIST AWARD: Douglas D. Bannerman (BFGL). This award recognizes a young scientist (within 10 years of Ph.D.) in the Northeast Region of the ADSA-ASAS for outstanding research contributions to the broad field of Animal/Dairy Science. (July 25, 2005)

EMINENT PARASITOLOGIST AWARD: Jitender P. Dubey (APDL). Awarded by the American Society for Parasitologist – for Eminence and international visibility for a substantial contribution to Parasitology for substantial period of time. (July 9, 2005)

SELECTED BY CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE, PA, AS OUTSTANDING ALUMNA AND CHARTER MEMBER OF ITS HONORARY LIBRIS SOCIETY: Joan K. Lunney (APDL). This award honors those graduates who exemplify the CHC motto of Faith, Charity, Knowledge. (April 15, 2005)

NATIONAL DAIRY HERD IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD: Dr. Rex L. Powell (retired, now a collaborator). (AIPL). For outstanding and dedicated service to the advancement and improvement of the DHIA program in the United States and vision and leadership in helping the DHIA system to provide the best dairy record and genetic management tools to dairy producers across the country. (March 19, 2005)

AMERICAN DAIRY SCIENCE ASSOCIATION FELLOW AWARD: Dr. Rex L. Powell (retired, now a collaborator). (AIPL). In recognition of distinguished service to the Dairy Industry and this Society. Awarded to no more than 0.2% of members annually. (July 26, 2005)

Beltsville Area Honorees for 2005 - Congratulations to our ANRI Winners!

BELTSVILLE AREA SENIOR RESEARCH SCIENTIST: Dr. Robert J. Wall of the Biotechnology and Germplasm Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute, is being recognized for outstanding research accomplishments in the introduction of recombinant DNA molecules into the genome of agricultural animals.

SUPPORT SCIENTIST OF THE YEAR: Dr. Krystyna M. Bialek-Kalinski of the Environmental Quality Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute, is being recognized for successfully coordinating the processing and analysis of all perchlorate samples of the PERC04 project while maintaining several multi-year environmental projects.

TECHNICIAN OF THE YEAR: Mr. Daniel J. Kuhar of the Animal Parasitics Disease Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute, is being recognized for exceptional support of swine immunology and disease research at BARC.

OFFICE SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR: Ms. Donna L. Geiman, Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute, is being recognized for outstanding program support to the Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory.

EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY/CIVIL RIGHTS AWARD: Dr. Earle Raymond Hunt, Jr., Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute, is being recognized for providing outstanding leadership, guidance, and service to the Imagine Excellence/El Ingeniro summer program at the USDA-ARS Beltsville Agricultural Research Center.

TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AWARD: Dr. Aref Abdul-Baki of the Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory, Animal and Natural Resources Institute, along with Mr. Sam Aslan, USDA/NRCS, is being recognized for developing and introducing a no-tillage, biologically-based management system which has restored profitability and enhanced environmental protection of California date palm production.

BAACUC's New Chairperson - Congratulations Julie!

Dr. Julie A. Long is the new chairperson of the Beltsville Animal Care and Use Committee (BAACUC). Dr. Long, a Poultry Research Physiologist in the Biotechnology and Germplasm Laboratory, ANRI, has been an active member of the BAACUC for the past 3 years. In addition to Dr. Long's training here at BARC and at IACUC 101 and 102 courses, she developed and subsequently chaired an animal care and use committee during her previous tenure at a zoological research institution. Most recently, she has served as the Vice-Chair for the BAACUC. (Jan 2005)
