CourtWeb: On-Line Rulings Information System

CourtWeb provides information to the public on selected recent rulings of those judges who have elected to make information available in the CourtWeb forum. Participating judges are listed on the judges’ selection menu of the rulings report search (for each individual court). Participating courts are listed on the entry screen and are as follows:

United States District Courts for the:

Northern District of Illinois, District of Minnesota, Northern District of New York, Southern District of New York, Southern District of Texas, Western District of Texas, District of Utah, District of Alaska, District of Vermont, District of Connecticut, and Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.

There are two ways to search rulings:

  • Rulings Reports: When you select a court from the drop down menu on the On-Line Rulings page, you are directed to a search page (also referred to as the “entry screen”) that allows you to obtain Rulings Reports by searching according to judge, caption, description, and/or date. Select a judge from the drop down menu, or a case number or partial case number, and click on "Run Report". If you want all cases for all judges or for a particular judge, leave the case number blank. To list all cases for a particular year, use the date parameters to limit the search. To search for a particular word or phrase in the caption or descriptions of a ruling, enter it in the respective "search" field.
  • Full-Text: To conduct a full-text Boolean search, use the full-text search option (below the Rulings Report search). Type the phrase or search term you want to search in the “Search for” box, select a “Court to Search” from the drop down menu, and then click on “Start Search”. On the results page, you can limit the search further by selecting a parameter in “Other”, including endorsement, opinion, judgment, or stipulation.

WatchList is an additional service provided by CourtWeb (free of charge) that allows you to register for automatic notification of the filing of rulings and/or opinions for select cases pending in the New York Southern District and/or other participating federal courts. A Watch List account includes all the features of CourtWeb, plus e-mail notification and additional report options for cases on your Watch List. Registration is required.

Additional links to U.S. Courts and opinions can be found on the Wirtz Labor Library’s Legal Research Resources page under the heading “Courts of the United States.”
