New Trend in Health Care: Retail Health Clinics

As the United States is facing an increasing shortage of primary care physicians, Americans are turning to other sources of primary care. One delivery model that has attracted growing attention is the retail clinic, which aims to provide convenient and accessible services at lower, clearer costs. These clinics are expanding rapidly across the country, from fewer than 100 in 2005 to nearly 1,000 today. In September, NCL hosted a stakeholder forum on Retail Health Clinics. Heard about Biologics?

NCL convened a forum in 2007 to provide policy makers and other stakeholder organizations the opportunity to engage in an open and candid discussion on this issue. More than 40 participants representing broad interests, including consumer and patient advocacy groups, health care providers, government, industry, and others, attended the half-day forum. Therapeutic Substitution 101

If you take prescription medication, there’s a good chance that someday you’ll be asked to switch from your current drug to a new one. There are many reasons, including: costs to you or your insurer, changes in your insurance coverage, or new drugs coming on the market. Therapeutic substitution can offer benefits, but it can also pose some risks. The key to ensuring your safety when making a switch is what patients’ rights advocates call full transparency. Learn about Substitution or read our new survey.

Did You Know? It is a myth that beer and wine are not as strong as the typical cocktail. Standard serving sizes of all alcohol beverages -- beer, wine, and distilled spirits -- are equal in alcohol strength and their effect on the body. Learn more at Alcohol: How It All Adds Up.
