General
The Environmentally Responsible Redevelopment and Reuse (ER3) Initiative uses enforcement and other Agency-wide incentives to promote sustainable redevelopment of contaminated sites.
GHP seeks to incorporate environmental streamlining and stewardship into all aspects of the highway lifecycle. This is a public-private initiative spearheaded by the Environmental Protection Agency's mid-Atlantic region to advance environmentally sustainable highway practices.
A collection of partnership experiences that states, regions, and cities have had with foreign counterparts on sharing best practices and innovations in environmental policies and methods. The links on this site provide information on the partnership background, resultant initiatives where applicable, and contacts or links to the partnership Web site. Many regions have also led exchanges with other countries that did not result in permanent partnerships; a selection of these experiences can also be found on the site.
Labs21 is a voluntary program dedicated to improving the environmental performance of U.S. laboratories. All public and private sector laboratories in the United States are invited to join the Labs21 Partnership Program. The goal of the program is to encourage the development of sustainable, high-performance, and low-energy laboratories nationwide.
The Office of the Federal Environmental Executive (OFEE) is leading a new initiative to bring together private sector entities with proven, successful environmental management systems (EMS) as mentors with Federal facilities in order to enhance the Federal EMS development and implementation, and provide an opportunity for all to learn from each other's experiences.
Performance Track is a public/private partnership recognizing top environmental performance among participating U.S. facilities of all types, sizes, and complexity, public and private. Program partners are providing leadership in many areas, including preventing pollution at its source. Currently, the program has about 300 members and welcomes all qualifying facilities. Applications are accepted twice a year: February 1 - April 30 and August 1 - October 31.
This is one of EPA's premier partnership programs, working with individual industry sectors to compare and improve the performance and human health and environmental risks and costs of existing and alternative products, processes, and practices. DfE partnership projects promote integrating cleaner, cheaper, and smarter solutions into everyday business practices.
Air Emissions
A partnership established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), this program publicly recognizes employers whose commuter benefits reach the National Standard of Excellence.
A voluntary industry-government partnership that encourages companies to develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies and set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals.
This is an EPA cooperative alliance with the supermarket industry and other stakeholders to promote the adoption of technologies, strategies, and practices that reduce emissions of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and greenhouse gases (GHGs) and increase refrigeration system energy efficiency.
This is a cooperative effort of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the coal combustion products (CCPs) industry to help promote the beneficial use of CCPs and the environmental benefits which can result from that beneficial use. By joining the C2P2 Challenge Program, organizations will work to increase the beneficial use of CCPs. Members can join the voluntary C2P2 Challenge program in one of two capacities, as Champions or Leaders:
  • Champions are the generators, marketors or users of CCPs or CCP content products, such as coal-burning energy facilities, that are encouraged to increase their use or marketing of CCPs.
  • Leaders are those organizations that work to promote greater use and marketing of CCPs through membership-based and community programs.
The mission of the Environment Program is to reduce the generation of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming, conserve living marine resources with a particular emphasis on fisheries, and protect critical forest habitat and wilderness on public lands in North America. The Trusts make grants only to organizations classified as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
This is a collaborative effort between EPA and the electric power industry to identify and implement cost-effective solutions to reduce sulfur hexafluoride (SF6 ) emissions. SF6 is a highly potent greenhouse gas used in the industry for insulation and current interruption in electric transmission and distribution equipment. Currently over 70 utilities participate in this voluntary program.
This is a collaborative voluntary program between EPA and the freight industry that will increase the energy efficiency and energy security of our country while significantly reducing air pollution and greenhouse gases. The Partnership creates strong market-based incentives that challenge companies shipping products and the truck and rail companies delivering these products, to improve the environmental performance of their freight operations. SmartWay Transport partners improve their energy efficiency, save money, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.
A partnership between leaders from federal, state, and local government, the private sector, and environmental groups in California, Oregon, Idaho and Washington, Alaska, British Columbia and Mexico. The Collaborative is part of an overall national campaign to reduce diesel emissions. The goal of the West Coast Collaborative is to leverage significant federal funds to reduce emissions from the most polluting diesel sources in the most affected communities and to significantly improve air quality and public health.
Energy
This program is a voluntary state-federal partnership that encourages states to develop and implement cost-effective clean energy and environmental strategies that help further both environmental and clean energy goals and achieve public health and economic benefits. Under the Partnership Program, states work across their relevant agencies to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for using existing and new energy policies and programs to promote energy efficiency, clean distributed generation, renewable energy and other clean energy sources that can provide air quality and other benefits. As of September 2005 the following states are partners: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas.
A voluntary industry-government partnership that encourages companies to develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies and set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals.
This partnership encourages electricity customers to voluntarily purchase or generate green power. Green Power Partners must use green power in an amount that meets or exceeds EPA’s minimum benchmarks. EPA offers market information, communications assistance and recognition. Many familiar Fortune 500 companies, cities, states, federal agencies, universities and small businesses are Green Power Partners. The CHP Partnership is a voluntary program that seeks to reduce the environmental impact of power generation by promoting the use of CHP.The Partnership works closely with energy users, the CHP industry, state and local governments, and other stakeholders to support the development of new projects and promote their energy, environmental, and economic benefits.
This group partners and facilitates communications with Federal agencies, utilities and energy service companies to implement cost-effective energy efficiency and water conservation projects. The Working Group meets three times a year to exchange information on recent utility incentive program success stories, current FEMP programs and products, individual agency energy management programs, and reports from the various Working Group subcommittees.
Voluntary program that supports the organizational procurement of green power by offering expert advice, technical support, tools and resources. Partnering with EPA can help your organization lower the transaction costs of buying green power, reduce its carbon footprint, and communicate its leadership to key stakeholders. Green power is electricity produced from a subset of renewable resources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and low-impact hydro.
The U.S. EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) is a voluntary assistance and partnership program that promotes the use of landfill gas as a renewable, green energy source.
This partnership focuses on cost-effective, near-term methane recovery and use as a clean energy source. The partnership is an international collaboration between developed countries, developing countries, and countries with economies in transition to reduce global methane emissions, improve mine safety, reduce waste, and improve local air quality.
On Earth Day in 2004, this Partnership initiated a global voluntary effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicle air conditioning systems. Members include environmental authorities from Australia, Canada, Europe, and Japan; environmental and industry non-governmental organizations; and global vehicle manufacturers and their suppliers. Partnership members are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from mobile air conditioning systems in a number of ways.
This is a flexible, voluntary partnership between EPA and the oil and natural gas industry. Through the Program, EPA works with companies that produce, process, and transmit and distribute natural gas to identify and promote the implementation of cost-effective technologies and practices to reduce emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
This is a collaborative voluntary program between EPA and the freight industry that will increase the energy efficiency and energy security of our country while significantly reducing air pollution and greenhouse gases. Hazardous Materials/Chemistry
To promote innovative chemical technologies that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture, and use of chemical products.
This program encourages public and private organizations to form voluntary partnerships with EPA that reduce the use or release of any of 31 Priority Chemicals (PCs).
Hazardous Waste
WasteWise is a free, voluntary, EPA program helping U.S. organizations eliminate costly municipal solid waste, benefitting the bottom line and the environment.
Natural Resources
The US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) GreenScapes program provides cost-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for large-scale landscaping. Designed to help preserve natural resources and prevent waste and pollution, GreenScapes encourages companies, government agencies, and other entities to make more holistic decisions regarding waste generation and disposal and the associated impacts on land, water, air, and energy use.
Pesticides
The Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program (PESP) is a voluntary program that forms partnerships with pesticide users to reduce the health and environmental risks associated with pesticide use and implement pollution prevention strategies.
Solid Waste
The U.S. EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) is a voluntary assistance and partnership program that promotes the use of landfill gas as a renewable, green energy source.
WasteWise is a free, voluntary, EPA program helping U.S. organizations eliminate costly municipal solid waste, benefitting the bottom line and the environment.
Transportation
A voluntary partnership between various freight industry sectors and EPA that establishes incentives for fuel efficiency improvements and greenhouse gas emissions reductions. By 2012, this initiative aims to reduce between 33 - 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions per year. At the same time, the initiative will result in fuel savings of up to 150 million barrels of oil annually. There are three primary components of the program: creating partnerships, reducing all unnecessary engine idling, and increasing the efficiency and use of rail and intermodal operations.
A voluntary, public/private initiative which seeks to incorporate environmental streamlining and stewardship into all aspects of the highway lifecycle.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will launch a new partnership with Natural Resources Canada in a joint effort to reduce emissions and fuel use from freight transportation. The agencies will sign a memorandum of understanding to engage the international freight industry in undertaking voluntary actions to save fuel and reduce carbon dioxide.
Water
A new Agency-wide effort to foster greater collaboration to accelerate restoration of watersheds and fisheries threatened by abandoned mine runoff. EPA is pioneering an innovative agreement as a tool to identify parties rights and responsibilities related to the voluntary clean up of abandoned mines and to protect the Good Samaritan against pre-existing liabilities. Under the Good Samaritan Initiative, the Agency will expand the use of existing tools and promote greater collaboration to encourage more voluntary cleanups. The Agency will also continue to work cooperatively with partners through our Clean Water Act programs, including ?319 (polluted runoff management) and Targeted Watersheds Grants to clean up abandoned mines and protect fishable waters.
A cooperative effort between EPA, American Water Works Association, Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies, National Association of Water Companies, and Association of State Drinking Water Administrators. The Partnership encourages and assists United States water suppliers to voluntarily enhance their water systems performance, for greater control of Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other microbial contaminants.
A voluntary public-private partnership that identifies and promotes high performance products and programs that help preserve the nation’s water supply (EO 13423, Section 2(c)).
